The odds of you knowing someone touched by breast cancer? Unfortunately, they’re pretty good. Avon Walk participants and donors often ask ‘How many lives will I save?’ And, often, participants and donors are surprised by these statistics from avonwalk.org.
- A woman has a 1 in 8 chance of developing breast cancer in her lifetime.
- Every 3 minutes, there is a new diagnosis of invasive breast cancer.
- Approximately 230,480 women and 2,140 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year.
- Every 13 minutes, a life is lost to breast cancer.
- 39,520 women and 450 men in the U.S. will die from the disease annually.
- The National Cancer Institute estimates that approximately 2.6 million U.S. women with a history of breast cancer are living today, more than half of whom were diagnosed less than 10 years earlier. Most of these individuals were cancer-free, while others still had evidence of cancer and may still be undergoing treatment.
- There are more than 250,000 women under the age of 40 in the U.S. living with breast cancer, and over 11,000 will be diagnosed this year.
- White, non-Hispanic women are more likely to develop breast cancer but African-American women are more likely to die from it.
- Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among Hispanic women.
The Georgetown Lombardi/Capital Breast Care Center Avon Team wants to change these statistics. That’s why we’re participating in the Washington, DC, Avon Walk for Breast Cancer May 4-5, 2013. We are in it to end it.
By donating to the team, you can be in it to end it, too. With less than 33 days until we walk 39.3-miles in our fight against breast cancer, by donating now, your gift will help us reach our goal of $100,000 to help people touched by breast cancer. For every Avon Walker (and we’ve got over 60 members on our team):
- 1 underinsured woman can receive a breast biopsy
- 12 low-income women can get mammograms
- 24 newly-diagnosed breast cancer patients can get counseling and support
- 51 breast cancer patients can get home-delivered meals
Every dollar counts. Every dollar of the $100,000 that the Georgetown Lombardi/CBCC Avon Team raises in the fight against breast cancer.
- $35 pays for one day of home-delivered meals for a breast cancer patient undergoing chemo or radiation therapy
- $150 can help an under-insured woman get a mammogram
- $250 can help a newly-diagnosed woman get the x-rays and lab work need to determine treatment
- $1,000 can help an underinsured woman get a breast biopsy or MRI to see if cancer is present
Please consider a donation in honor of someone you know or love who’s been touched by breast cancer. By helping us reach our $100,000 goal, you’ll help to support medical research into the possible causes of and a cure for breast cancer, education and early detection programs, and clinical care and support services for women with breast cancer in communities across the U.S. There is a special focus on helping medically underserved women, the poor, minorities, the elderly, or those with inadequate health insurance. Donate here. Thank you for your support; you really do make a difference. How many lives will you save?
