How many lives will you save?

The odds of you knowing someone touched by breast cancer? Unfortunately, they’re pretty good. Avon Walk participants and donors often ask ‘How many lives will I save?’ And, often, participants and donors are surprised by these statistics from avonwalk.org.

  • A woman has a 1 in 8 chance of developing breast cancer in her lifetime.
  • Every 3 minutes, there is a new diagnosis of invasive breast cancer.
  • Approximately 230,480 women and 2,140 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year.
  • Every 13 minutes, a life is lost to breast cancer.
  • 39,520 women and 450 men in the U.S. will die from the disease annually.
  • The National Cancer Institute estimates that approximately 2.6 million U.S. women with a history of breast cancer are living today, more than half of whom were diagnosed less than 10 years earlier. Most of these individuals were cancer-free, while others still had evidence of cancer and may still be undergoing treatment.
  • There are more than 250,000 women under the age of 40 in the U.S. living with breast cancer, and over 11,000 will be diagnosed this year.
  • White, non-Hispanic women are more likely to develop breast cancer but African-American women are more likely to die from it.
  • Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among Hispanic women.

The Georgetown Lombardi/Capital Breast Care Center Avon Team wants to change these statistics. That’s why we’re participating in the Washington, DC, Avon Walk for Breast Cancer May 4-5, 2013. We are in it to end it.

By donating to the team, you can be in it to end it, too. With less than 33 days until we walk 39.3-miles in our fight against breast cancer, by donating now, your gift will help us reach our goal of $100,000 to help people touched by breast cancer. For every Avon Walker (and we’ve got over 60 members on our team):

  • 1 underinsured woman can receive a breast biopsy
  • 12 low-income women can get mammograms
  • 24 newly-diagnosed breast cancer patients can get counseling and support
  • 51 breast cancer patients can get home-delivered meals

Every dollar counts. Every dollar of the $100,000 that the Georgetown Lombardi/CBCC Avon Team raises in the fight against breast cancer.

  • $35 pays for one day of home-delivered meals for a breast cancer patient undergoing chemo or radiation therapy
  • $150 can help an under-insured woman get a mammogram
  • $250 can help a newly-diagnosed woman get the x-rays and lab work need to determine treatment
  • $1,000 can help an underinsured woman get a breast biopsy or MRI to see if cancer is present

Please consider a donation in honor of someone you know or love who’s been touched by breast cancer. By helping us reach our $100,000 goal, you’ll help to support medical research into the possible causes of and a cure for breast cancer, education and early detection programs, and clinical care and support services for women with breast cancer in communities across the U.S. There is a special focus on helping medically underserved women, the poor, minorities, the elderly, or those with inadequate health insurance. Donate here. Thank you for your support; you really do make a difference. How many lives will you save?
